I'll post some vids of Black Pop Culture in Japan, and if it is a fad then it has been a fad long before I got here, from the dark skinned punched perm Yakuza types to the ladies in this vid with the whole tanning thing(I don't think this is a good thing,it reminds me of bleaching and maybe just as damaging IMO) to Hip hoppers and Dance hall queen and sound clash winners and participants in Jamaica and around the globe, now some of this does lends itself to stereotypes about what is "Black Culture" and can easily lead into black faced comedy skits ,but I think by now they leave that alone because black folks both here and abroad register their displeasure so hopefully it won't pop up again but??

Now there used to be a time when being black in Japan mean you were automatically viewed as a musician, military or later Ego no sensei (English teacher) but that stereotype is fading as we have an increasing number of blacks who are IT designers business owners of all sorts etc so hopefully they can get not just pop culture but a taste of our high culture as well, some times I am called upon to give lectures about Jamaican,African and African American culture and experience,so on a personal note I try to kick-up the culture a notch.

I've always contended that we need to A: travel more and B: Be ambasadors of our communities wherever we go. The Eurocentric world has created a concept of us and exported it all over the world and people being people, they automatically believe what they see in the media is true. Its not till they meet us in real life that they are able to get a more accurate picture. By going out there and being visable in the arts, technology, medicine, sciences we help to dispell those negative expectations.

So true Truthteacher so true , we have at least a 150 yrs of negative or misrepresentation to deal with if you are on this side of the pond, the good news is,it doesn't take much to dispel those misrepresentations, the bad news is it doesn't take much to confirm them either.

This is a video i have been saving ! This Japanese dude ( Kite) has taken " Poppin" style dance & infused it with traditional style Japanese dance & music, which is pure brilliant to my mind. this is in the first part of his dance, second part is more Hip Hop traditional style Poppin, enjoy !
