I have always had a fascination with the dance of the Tango & it's music. We all know about the influence of Africa on other Latin dances such as the Mambo etc. But I had a suspicion that Africans also had something to do with the Tango. Like the rest of South America, Argentina had a sizable African population due to slavery, which now, are almost invisible, in the total population which classify as" white".
This is a wonderful lecture by an authority Robert Farris Thompson, who has written a book" Tango: An Art History Of Love " who knows the African influence esp. from the Congo on the Tango & it's music. He is knowledgeable & passionate, about Africa & it's influence on dance forms; he is also a Euro- American.
The video is somewhat long, so make time for at least an hour. Also the audio is strained in certain spots of the lecture but, not enough to not continue with this lecture; for he delivers, with examples by a Black Argentinean who is the master of the dance of Tango, with his partner. I learned some valuable knowledge to confirm a hunch, I have always had about the Tango, enjoy !

Policies of racial whiting, Africans in Argentina being put in wars of the 19th century on the front lines, in which many were killed. Being highly segregated in slums where disease wiped out large numbers of Afro- Argentinians. This is just what I remember as some of the reasons that many don't know Argentina even had a somewhat large African population.

Being highly segregated in slums where disease wiped out large numbers of Afro- Argentinians. This is just what I remember as some of the reasons that many don't know Argentina even had a somewhat large African population. Mixing into the population also erased the visability of Africanity. However, if you know what you're looking at, you can still see it. When I was in Argentina I saw a lot more people with darker skin tones than I expected, however, they didn't have stereotypically African features. Common sense tells you though that it had to be African genes because they are much darker than native Americans and being that I was there in the winter, couldn't have been a tan. However, because of the brain washing, most people will deny it, claiming Arab or some other non African ancestry as an explanation. Just like Paula Abdul claims Brazilian and Arab ancestry to deny her African roots. Those who know what they are looking at know that those dark features belong to those who are Afro Brazilian. There really is a strong brain wash in Argentina to identify only as European.
