I am delving into this further. To help explain this chart to lurkers.
To those wanting to understand the chart and what it is telling you , look at it closely.
The following graph tells a story. I will try to explain. TreeMix software tool is powerful in that it uses an algorithm that identifies and isolates ACTUAL historical events through genetics. Keep in mind it does not tell you WHEN these events took place. But depending on where the ‘arrow” lands on the tree one can infer when the “event” took place. Also keep in mind this is a more powerful tool than eg ADMIXTURE..
ADMIXTURE “infer” migration events through frequency, it is very simplistic and elementary. It assumes a population with the highest frequency is the “source” population. That idea is archaic and over two decades old. Yet, some stubborn scientists continue to use it. Nevertheless.
Looking at the chart and understanding it, several things become clear. Here are a few pointers for those wanting to understand what the chart shows.
The colored lines are the migration events, AFTER initial OOA. The length of the black lines tells the length of isolation of specific populations or groups.
Notice Mandenka is a source population for “middle Easterns” ie Druze and Palestinians
Another South Saharan group(Yoruba) is a source for Mozabite(North Africans) , then Mozabites have a colored line going to southern Europeans ( starting with Tuscans/Italians). Notice there is no line going from Bedouins TO Europeans. Why? Because this supports what Lazaridis and Pickrell observed. The discontinuity between the near east and Europe but instead there exist a North-South cline with a Mediterranean bridge.
In other words, from Yoruba, to Mozabites, to Southern Europe.
Notice there is another line going from Mandenka to Makrani and none from Bantu-Kenya to Makrani. Significance? Bantu-Kenya is an East African population. Answer. – This is not slavery, Makrani is an old African population existing in the Harrapan Valley of Indian sub-continent.
A line goes from Southern Europeans to the Maya. Most likely this is colonial era,
Surprisingly a line goes from the BASE/ROOT of Native Americans to Russia.. From the BASE/ROOT means it is very ancient. That is most likely is pre-Mesolithic time back-migration.
That leads to the other surprise of an event going from the ROOT of the African branch to the Cambodians. This line start close to the “Near East” branch but on the African branch. This implies it is may be a separate OOA event albeit very old to Cambodia. Most likely also pre-Mesolithic.
Then we see two separate events from Indian sub-continent to Central Asia.
Keep in mind these are only the studied populations(in the current dataset). If more populations are included a different or more revealing picture may emerge.
Any questions hit me up.
