The Face of Japan Is Changing, But Some Aren't Ready

Change happens slowly in Japan, but it does happen. You wake up one day, and things that weren't possible years ago are happening today. Nowhere is that more evident than in the woman who will represent Japan in the Miss Universe pageant—but that's to the chagrin of some who wanted a more "Japanese" winner.

Eriana Miyamoto is the twenty-year-old selected to represent Japan in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant. As reported by Mainichi News, Miyamoto even expressed uneasiness as to whether or not it would be okay for a hafu [half-Japanese] like her to represent Japan.

When introducing herself to reporters after her selection, Miyamoto said that her mother is Japanese and her father is American. She added that she was born and raised in Nagasaki and that while she doesn't "look Japanese" on the outside, on the inside, there are many Japanese things about her.

Let's be clear. She is Japanese. She's a Japanese citizen. She grew up here. She was born here. She's Japanese. Yet, out of politeness or even humility, she explained herself to the Japanese press. After this was out of the way, the rest of her interview progressed fairly normally with questions about how she felt when her name was announced or if she's thinking of entering the Japanese entertainment industry.

Her selection has caused controversy online in Japan. Website Byokan Sunday and Naver Matome have a good round-up of comments that appeared on Twitter. Comments like, "Is it okay to select a hafu to represent Japan?" or "Because this is Miss Universe Japan, don't you think hafu are a no-no?" When not wondering if this was "okay," others said things like she didn't look Japanese, her face was "too gaijin" or that the country deserved a "pure-blooded Japanese" (純日本人 or "junnihon") beauty instead. Elsewhere online, one commenter wrote, "It makes me uncomfortable to say she's representing Japan."

Because the vast, vast majority of Japan is filled with Japanese people from homogeneous backgrounds, you get comments like this from people who have no idea what it is like to be different or not to be part of an overwhelming majority. There's a lack of empathy, and unfortunately, that can reflect poorly on Japanese society.

This is a big social deal in Japan this is very new, then again I shouldn't be surprise because for yrs now the most Japanese of sports outside of Baseball,Sumo have been dominated by Gaijins aka foreigners to the point of being ubiquitous, but change is happening about a year and change ago one minister tossed around a very novel idea that what is considered Japanese needs to change given the Japanese negative birth rate , what will change ultimately mean?? only time will tell.

very interesting ! Japan like other Asian countries are very homogeneous ,so I guess if you are of a different race or ethic type you would stick out like a sore thump . Unlike in the West where their is more "race mixing"; & biracial' s are becoming a larger part of the pie, so to speak. I believe that evolution has her own plan for humanity, in which we will all over the next thousands years or so become ONE HUMANITY, a" global mixing",this is a " White Supremacist" worst nightmare, the dreaded" Mongrel Race" !

this is the difference between
a nation and tribal territory.

The modern nation-state
is composed of citizenry.

The citizenry can be of any
race colour tribe ethnicity
or speech.

Any citizen of a country is
eligible to represent the
nation they belong to
provided they were
born there.

Hmm, something like Hawaii?

Modern Hawaiians are mostly of foreign descent.

The indigenous Hawaiian had no chance of escape.

Hawaii is an interesting place isn't it? Like Native Americans, so many died off after contact with European diseases. It was a small population to begin with so it wasn't hard for them to be outnumbered by European and Asian immigrants and of course there was intermarriage, mostly with the Asian indentured laborers. Nevertheless, they still know who they are and are really reviving their language and culture which was on the verge of extinction. They're actually a nation within a nation, (since I don't see the US ever letting them go). With regards to Japan though..... Funny how anime characters never look Japanese, but always have Japanese names and the stories are set in Japan. Is Japan begoming a living anime nation?

There is a word called Otaku, it roughly means hobby,but it is viewed more of an obsession this describes many Japanese in the area of anime and gadgets to the exclusion of the natural world around them, especially males the declining and negative growth rate among them is a direct result of this, much of the men no longer communicate and the ladies are fed up and can no longer be bothered.
