1st video on Do Black folks Know their History?
2nd video on the The Frankincense Trail - Egypt
Many know about the silk Road in Asia, but their was a Frankincense Tail that was very famous. The ancient Egyptians used quit a bit of Frankincense, along with Myrrh for the temples worship of the Neters . So this documentary gives some history of this famous incense .

Dr. Henry Louis Gates (Skip) is premiering his 6 part series on PBS Feb27,20017 Called" Africa's Great Civilizations". now Dr. Gates did a series on Africa early 2000's on PBS; it was good but he really did a dance around ancient Kemet( Egypt) that did not sit well with me. Now I have great respect for Dr. Gates,( really like his series on " Finding Your Roots") but because he is beholden to the corporate backers of PBS & the institution he teaches at he can dance around issues. But this is a brand new series on Africa so I'm going to watch & see how he does with this new series.

Thanks for the heads up as always Nebsen looking fwd to viewing the series btw I came on these other trailers. Anansi, I'm also looking forward to Dr. Gates series. I did not want to say but, I will, since I see that Christopher Ehret is in this series. My hunch was that Dr. Gates might be using some of Christopher Ehret ideas,& his work in this new series; also it will be great to see some scholars of African decent presenting their ideas, & findings about Africa. Can't wait !

Just watched Dr. Louis Henry Gates" The Great Civilizations Of Africa , pt 1&2. I'll start of by saying" The Perfect Should Not be The Enemy Of The Good", with that said , Africa's Great Civilizations is a beauty to behold; finally on broad cast television we have an enlightened view on Africa precolonial past. pt 1 dealt with the beginning of modern humans migration in & out of Africa. The Nile valley finally we get a more informed understanding of the peoples that eventually populated the Nile Valley. Showing how the Sahara at one time was much different than today's;It was fertile, lush, & green, with an abundances of wild life. Than it's climate changes/shifts & the people were pushed out, migrated- moved into the Nile valley showing that the were black Africans. Than from that point, all the scholars are white, talking about ancient Kemet (Egypt); when they edit(cut) to show the ancient Egyptians would look farming etc. they showed only modern day Arabs, not one dark skinned , or Nuban as how they would look. Also he Dr. Gates never used the word Kemet not once, as to how they described themselves. Also he & white scholars described than KermaKush ) with the old outdated, bitter enemies, rivals, etc. trope, very binary with little shading, & not discussing the symbiotic relationship & kinship that existed . Ancient Egypt, the colonizers Kush the colonized ;" ancient Egypt only wants gold, & other luxury goods".Also making a distinction of the Black Pharaohs as opposed to what a non Black African Egypt ? But when they talk about Kush ( Kerma) etc. most of the scholars were African a kind of apartheid I would say. I read a tweet that said this about the series "So far, Deeply disappointed in African Civilizations. A very Euro-centric view of Africa, not enough African voices ! "
I'll just say this series the part on the Nile Valley, they hit all the right keys but missed or misplayed some major notes. But glad this series was made to inform many about Africa's great past. It is a far cry from what we have gotten on broad cast television on Africa in the past so I'll take it, with filling in with my own knowledge base. When it( they) talks about the rest of Africa it is less problematic, & a joy !

I see that Christopher Ehret were among the scholars that helped shape" The Great Civilizations Of Africa" series, along with Dr. Gates, Emmanuel Akyeamong, who is African, Cecile Fromont who is of African decent . Reading C.Ehret book " The Civilizations Of Africa " is a great asset in filling in where the series used a short hand in telling the histories. This is a pivotal time for such a series on Africa to appear to the world . I read a post asking if they could have Spanish subtitles on the series for those who speak Spanish only.

makheruspeaks.blogspot.com/2017/03/a-review-of-henry-louis-gates-africas.htmlI found a review of" Africa's Great Civilizations " series by Dr. Henry Louis Gates; that I felt really nailed some of the criticism that I had myself concerning this pt 1 of this documentary. Their is even some criticism concerning some statements that Christopher Ehret made concerning the empire of the 25 dynasty. this is the only review of Pt. 1 of the series that I've found. Many of the articles so far , are just statements about the series, Because this historical information about Africa's precolonial past is so new to most people of all " races" & many except those who have made ancient Kemet (Egypt) their life study, would notices such errors/mistakes in pt 1. As a whole this does not take away that much from all other 5 parts of the series. But I'm so glad that some one wants to correct this & write about it.

H.L. Gates, Africa's Great Civilizations presented on PBS during Black History Month, is just another Eurocentric view of ancient African history. the series is interesting but it only reflects the European view that African history is the result of outside influences. In the series he shows images of the Egyptians as Blacks, but by saying that after the 25th Dynasty took Egypt they became the "Black Rulers" of Egypt, Gates implies that the ancient Egyptians were non-Blacks. Read more: A Review of Africa's Great CivilizationsI also found problematic the Berber section dealing with Spain, not once was the word Moors used. Like I stated, most people this information is new to them even though many in the academic world, this history is known, but not discussed. here we are in 2017 & for the 1st time such a series has been done, even with the flaws it is better than what has been presented. Watch the editing, & you will see, some inconsistencies .Words are saying one thing, but the editing esp. in PT 1 conveys another. It would be great if folks on other blogs/boards dealing with ancient Africa/Egypt started , fact checking, this series , & write about such as yourself so other can be forewarned about these issues.

I keep missing the part on Nile valley civ, but from what I have seen he is playing it safe which is annoying as well as disappointing as folks in the field already is beyond that, I'd say good not great i'd give it a C- , it was only a little better than Wonders of the African world but not much.
