As far as I know, vitiligo has nothing to do with whiteness. White people are not unpigmented; they just have less pigment than most other people. They can get vitiligo, too, although in a very fair white person, this will be less noticeable at a distance.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system selectively attacks the melanocytes in the skin’s epidermis, so that the skin loses its color. Usually only patches of skin are affected. Patches of hair may turn white as well. There are few other physical consequences, and no threat to the patient’s life, yet the cosmetic and social fallout can be considerable. While the affected patches function normally as skin, they do need to be protected from the sun, by sunscreen or clothing.
