Peace Phamily I use a variety of dictionary sources for ancient Egyptian when doing comparisons with modern African languages. One of the sources I use is Mark Vygus' ongoing project to create a free pdf with thousands of pages of Mdw Ntr compiled from various modern dictionaries in print. He has recently updated the dictionary and it is available at the link below. If you print it, it will take a lot of paper. The jewel is in the ability to do a word search, in various formats, to find what you're looking for. So for those who don't have access to the expensive dictionaries, and who have been relying solely on Budge, now you have something in which to expand your knowledge with. Enjoy! You can download it to your computer (it's better used that way): renfield.physics.utah.edu/wiki/images/d/d1/Pdf_dictionary.pdf

Thanks! Good resource, ordered by actual glyphs. Great feature. Any idea of Vygus' source for his word meanings and spellings?

Dictionaries & Grammar
Adolf Erman with Hermann Grapow (1971), Wörterbuch der Ägyptischen SpracheDownloadable pdf copy. This remains the definitive lexicon, first published in 12 book volumes. Requires at least basic familiarity with the sign system. German helpful, but online translation aids can be used to convert to English if done with care. The web page also offers Möller’s guide to Hieratic, the cursive form of Egyptian writing used on most papyrus documents. ●Dictionary; 26 pdf files, one for each initial consonant ●German-Egyptian word list; 5 pdf files ●Egyptian-German by transliteration; 3 pdf files ●References; 17 pdf files, lists ancient documents where words appear www.egyptology.ru/lang.htm#WoerterbuchMark Vygus Dictionary Keyed by Gardiner sign number; amateur source without references but quite good. More than 39000 hieroglyphic spellings cover ≈8000 words, with a transliteration supplied for each. Large pdf file. Should be used with the Gardiner sign list in Egyptian Grammar. www.pyramidtextsonline.com/MarkVygusDictionary.pdfGardiner sign number table, web pages www.ancientegyptonline.co.uk/Gardiner-sign-list.htmlJsesh hieroglyphic computer text editor, download & install jsesh.qenherkhopeshef.org/Unicode hieroglyphs table for computer fonts, pdf unicode.org/charts/PDF/U13000.pdfGardiner (1957), Egyptian Grammar. The classic basic text in English, still referred to today. For serious beginners; terminology used in English grammar (e.g. “subordinate clause”), but assumes no previous knowledge of Egyptian or linguistics. A background on the language history is in the introduction. While excellent, be aware that scholarship on the Afroasiatic language family (characterized by presence of consonantal roots, geminated consonants, and infixes) has changed over time, becoming far less judgmental as well. Vocabulary lists, exercises, and brief dictionary at back of book. osamasallam.com/DATA/References/40/n3bZU5WYaVgZnK6F2ZcNIbey8DIgL9.pdf
