Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question. I note that the interesting maps showing ancestral and "derived" skin color show NO results in the northeast part of Africa. Would someone define "derived" for a layman? Is "derived" essentially equivalent to results from "admixture." I am most especially interested in that area of The Continent - the region around modern Ethiopia. Let me be more precise with my question. While the African has the capacity to create lighter skin color... Is the PRIMARY reason for significantly lighter skin color in that area of the Continent due to "internal" genetic capability? OR Is the PRIMARY reason the admixture with those who migrated to or invaded that area? Thanks in advance! I don't know what the term, "derived" means, but here are my 2 cents on the question. I believe that the lighter skin tones found in north Africa are due to two factors. Firstly, North Africa is not a tropical, but a sub tropical region. Therefore, it is not out of the question that long term residents in the region developed lighter skin tones as an adaptation. This is not unique to Northern Africa alone. The San of the Kalahari in Southern Africa also live in a sub tropical zone. They are known to exhibit a high percentage of individuals with light brown or yellowish skin tones. In fact, this is quite common. The second factor contributing to light skin tones is admixture with lighter skinned populations who migrated into the region. This has certainly been a contributing factor in historical times. So while admixture is a contributing factor, it is not the only factor, nor is it always the case in every situation. Also keep in mind that like the south, the nort has never been isolated from tropically adapted peoples migrating in from the south. To this day one can still find significant numbers of people in every country and region of North Africa with tropically adapted skin tones. You would be surprised to see that even in a city like Alexandria or Ismaliya in Egypt a significant percentage of the population is just as dark as people as far soth as Aswan. The region has always been deverse and is likely to always remain so. how do you know for certainly? what is the evidence? in north africa where most of the berbers live (and lived) is in the mountains where it will snow a lot, and wasnt it supposed to be colder back then also? the sahara wasnt even desert

Cold?? LOL! You got this TruthTeacher. I wont waste my typing. BTW I just came across an interesting recent paper on the Bantus of south Africa. Seems like they are already lightening. Some may know south Africa is also "high" latitude.
how do you know for certainly? what is the evidence?
? Oooookaay..... Well... Evidence.... Okay, my evidence. I've been traveling to North Africa on a regular basis since 1988. I work in a profession that brings me into contact wit North African on a daily basis and I live in a neighborhood with a very large North African population..... So I think that after 30 years.... I know what they look like. Then there are these other things, what are they called? Can't remember.... Oh ... HISTORY BOOKS. Yes, I've read many history books and they all said that North Africa was colonized several times by people from Greece. There was this thing, maybe you heard of it, it was called THE ROMAN EMPIRE. Yes, well, this thing called the Roman Empirewas located all across North Africa and these people called Romans, made cities and settled there. Those people were from a place called ROME. That's a city in Southern Europe in a country called Italy. I think it's still there.... I think, some one back me up on this?... There were also people from the Eastern Mediterranian, (that's located in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. They repeatedly migrated into North Africa and created settlements. One of the best known was called Carthage. Then there were these people called Arabs that came. And then there were these people called Turks that came. Now call me crazy, but I think that some of these people might have had babies. Just a theory really.....
in north africa where most of the berbers live (and lived) is in the mountains where it will snow a lot, and wasnt it supposed to be colder back then also? the sahara wasnt even desert
.....Uhm..... That's my point. North Africa is sub tropical. That's a fancy word that means it's not located in a tropical region.... and that's why it has winter and they have that thing called snow.... because snow melts in hot places.... like the tropics and that's why there isn't snow there..... Is any of this making sense yet? I'll take that as a yes.... Well. It just turns out by some really crazy coincidence that the southern part of Africa is also sub tropical, (see explanation above). And there are these people there that have been living there for a really, really, really long, long, long time call the San. And these San people have very light colored skin. I know this because I watch this thing.... mabey you've heard of it? Television? Yes....? Well anyway, this television thing shows moving pictures right in your own home in this box looking thing and I've seen these San people and they look a lot lighter skinned than people from the tropical areas, (that's that hot place). So because they are so isolated, they never mixed withb lighter skinned people, so.... calll me crazy... but I just assume they are lighter in color because they've lived for a looooong time in a place where it's not that hot and the sun's radiation is not that strong. Okay, wrapping up now... Still with me? I'll take that as yes.... Okay, well, since North Africa is also sub tropical, the people who furst lived there for a long time must have developed lighter skin too. SO, some of the people were already light skinned and then later, even more lighter skinned people moved there, therefore, a lot of light skinned people. And them's me thoughts.....

I'll make this simple, very, very simple. So simple that even you will understand. #1: I never said North Africans were not real Africans. What I said is that North Africans are Africans that have been living in a non tropical environment for a very, very, very, very, very, very, very long time. And because of that they have evolved lighter skins because of the environment. Important words for you to look up the meanings of: 1. Adaptation 2. Evolution and evolve 3. Environment 4. Sub tropical.... or non tropical. For that matter make it easy on yourself look up NON and then look up TROPICAL #2: I said that other peoples from outside Africa also migrated to the region. Another vocabulary word for you: ALSO. Write the definition and then use it in a sentence. So, to wrap it up. North Africans are real Africans. They always were real Africans and always will be. And they come in all colors. Are you following, or do you need me to make it more simple. Oh another word for you to look up: SIMPLE Anyway, these real Africans were already living in North Africa when one day, out of the clear blue sky, without warning..... Some people from a whole lot of places showed up..... and stayed. Over time, these people all married eachother and had babies. And that in a very simple, (because that seems to be your element), is an explanation of the history of North Africa.......

And them's me thoughts..... that is your thoughts as you said yourself not proofs. please give me proofs (evidence) that the berber in north africa are not real north african but roman empire and turks and greece and arabs and what bring you to north africa and where do you go? i am not to say you lie but many egyptsearch before have lied Okay. And that in a very simple, (because that seems to be your element), is an explanation of the history of North Africa.......
yes you have been repeating these things and mock but still no evidences of admixture any DNA studies to show this please all i am ask
I've got a better idea. Why don't you give me scientific and historical evidence to prove that Jews, Phoenicians, Arabs, Greeks and Romans never made any settlements in North Africa. Better yet, prove to me that the predominant language in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt is not Arabic.....
i am just asking for evidence of large scale admixture and the percent of it please greece has been conquered many much but the greek people are 99.5% greece according to the stanford genetic people i am not trying to insult you which i believe you think i am doing just asking for the amount of admixture in them? the article
There are no pure blooded populations anywhere in the Mediterranean and certainly not Greece. The Turks, Italians and god knows who else has been all up and down in them. With regards to North Africa, the fact is that there has been multiple migrations in the region. How much? who the hell cares and what does it matter? They are North African. It's their geography, culture, languages and ancestry theat make them who they are. There is never going to be any 100% accurate scientific study to tell you how mixed they are because to do that they would have to test every single individual in the region. So as I said before, history tells us they have absorbed diverse populations, that is a fact. But their identity is firmly rooted in things that are unique to their cultures and that is who they are. When you look at Tunisian culture, you are not looking at a transplant from Italy or Arabia. They may have borrowed elements from those places, but they created something unique to them alone. Case closed. Was I nice enough?

It's not your skin color or how mixed you are or are not that makes you who you are. It's your geography, your culture, your language your spiritual outlook on life etc. Those are the things that matter. Not the things you can only find in a lab. North Africans are a very diverse group of people. It is full of very unique cultures, they are not all the same. Morocco alone is home to dozens of distinct cultural groups. Their family lines and shared culltures are what gives them their identity and what makes North Africa far more exciting and interesting than Greece. See and I wasn't even sarcastic that time.
