I have to say that of all that's recently out there it's the SPARTACUS series that shows the multi-ethnic reality of the early to mid Late Republic Rome and the show is basically a graphic novel but on the "small screen."
So-called movie directors with researchers and big budgets need take note and begin honest representations of their subjects.

I think both Rome and Spartacus were Brit productions, I maybe mistaken or perhaps cable is just better than movies or big silver screen.

Premium Channels rely on subscription, so they don't have to worry about advertisers and their bottom lines. That's why show like the Wire, OZ, Spartacus etc..have only been produced by the premium channels. Soon or later the silver screen producers are going to realise that stat-quo is just not flying anymore. Basic cable is slowly realising this. There is yet another Jesus mini-docu or movie in production starring an actual Arab playing the part of Jesus. Ironically the production is based on Bill O' Reilly's book.

The point that I was trying to make is, in general Premium Channels don't have to appease major corporate investors. If you Google who owns the major studios and corporations that sponsors movies, a clear pictures start to emerge. Where as when premium channels go into production, there are mostly free of these influences, because their production companies are mostly in house. Premium channels like HBO or Showtime are not afraid of mainstream controversies, this is one reason they have much more room to work with. That's why you have show like Spartacus with a mutli-ethnic cast on Stars and you have the Troys, without Memnon, on the big screens. It's almost like independent movies vs major releases.

I somewhat understand your point better, although I have cut the cord on cable many years ago ; I understand they(cable) have the luxury of working in a broader, creative, ways , than regular broadcast T.V.But of all broadcast stations, Fox has a number one hit called" Empire" which just premiered last week, which is about the world of Hip- Hop, & a recording" Empire"; I'm not really a Hip- Hop fan, & I love it! ! The stars are, Taraji P. Henson & Terrence Howard both Academy Awards nominated stars. Also ABC has " Scandal" &" How To Get Away With Murder ",with Black female leads, Kerry Washington" Scandal" & Viola Davis" How To get Away With Murder". So even on regular broadcast T.V. we have more Black representation , with nuanced parts that we have not seen on the small screen .

I think both Rome and Spartacus were Brit productions, I maybe mistaken or perhaps cable is just better than movies or big silver screen. Well, the damnedest thing about it is New Zealand produced Spartacus. They boldly cast a Ghanaian Ashanti as an ancient Algerian Numidian, but to be historically accurate Oenomaus the doctore character was actually a Gaul in real life! Despite the graphic novel elements their use of language and especially the honest brutal reality of 1st C Roman morality places the series in a paradigm apparently more accurate than all before it. Of course they couldn't've done it had there not been The Gladiator and BBC's (with Italy & USA) Rome.
