Pharaoh, is a 1966 Polish film directed by Jerzy Kawalerowig . Novel by Boleslaw Prus . Now I saw this film at a Art House in Seattle in the 70's. Yes, they are all white ( Polish) playing ancient Egyptians, but this film has some very interesting aspects that you will not see in a Hollywood production. For one they did not have untold millions of dollars, so they had to get very creative. The film i think takes place with Ramses 111 & his court. You will also notice that they have a gray-brown tent to their skin in part because the film was shot using a" Golden- Yellow" register. The film has historical, social & political allegories that Poland was dealing with at the time, esp. the Catholic church; so their is a struggle between the priesthood & the state( Pharaoh ). I never forgot this film, & have been looking for it for a number of years, even with my awareness about ancient Egypt being an African culture at that time in the 70's, this film I just could not dislike. A note: that it was a Polish Egyptologist that found a Nubain priest tomb of the 25th dynasty, & with the help of Tony Browder & other African Americans, helped with the archaeological dig, which was a first ! The film is in subtitles , enjoy !
