I had heard a segment of this on the radio a few months ago & it left a deep impression on me, & saddened me greatly. Being a native of Chicago this really hit home. I had left Chicago in the 60's for greener pastures; but I'm still a Chicagoan at heart.Chicago is a very complicated city with many paradoxes; once named the most segregated city of the north. In the 20th century until the 80's; Chicago was the nations second largest city, with the seconded largest black population over a million Black folks. Those from Chicago know that Chicago will mark you for life with that special something, that is hard to describe. Gangsterism , has a deep history in Chicago, think " Al Capone". The Italians, Jews ,& the Irish, were all part of Chicago gangster past, but as whites, they were able to rise & become mainstream, & blend into the greater white masses of Chicago. Not for African Americans as a whole,we are pretty much still at the bottom of a fixed caste system in Chicago , not unlike other cities in America. I saw a series about Chicago, in the late 90's on PBS ; I leaned Chicago was the template for other large cities in America, not New York City. So we have a model of racism all across the USA. the effects on African Americans are esp. hash & cruel, for it makes for Black people to turn on each other like trapped animals in a cage .

Unless black folk turn it around they will be in even deeper trouble- whether under Trump or Hilary.
Since you are from Chicago let me ask you:
--what are some good solid black neighborhoods in Chicago where people are positive and productive and its not a wasteland? I don't mean tiny rich people neighborhoods filled with celebrities and such, but broad-based, solid middle class areas>
--what are some broad based, solid working class black areas?
--How have immigrants, black and non-black affected black neighborhoods?
--what are some of the BEST GRASSROOTS groups on the ground now, working to turn things around?

I have not lived in Chicago in over 25 years, so the information I had would be dated. Like most large urban areas their is much gentrification, displacement, going on, to change the dynamics ; also much factory job lost from the last half of the 20th century has taken place, look at Detroit, as an example of a large midwest city. I'm sure where ever you live esp. if a large urban environment, things have shifted, & changed, & you should fined your answers. Like the saying "every thing is local" ! |

To add some balance to my posts.... for it's not all about doom & gloom. This is a upbeat video called RP Banging On King Drive which was made during the Bud Billikan's Parade which takes place in the summer, I believe July or August . I have been to this parade many times growing up in Chicago, enjoy !
