Its a complex issue, but yes there is colorism in the Latino X community. The so-called Brazilian "racial paradise" for example was always a myth. White remains on top and with other gradients lower down. In some ways it was more relaxed than the raw, open Jim Crow of the US, but the bottom line is still white on top. This is why I am so skeptical of white people who gin up propaganda about "white genocide" and "whites disappearing genetically" and so on. Not only is this "disappearance" dubious BS, (yeah right one-third of the earth's population gonna disappear due to "immigrants"). Hell England is a "massive" 3% black at present, and still 86% white overall. Wooo...roll ominous music.. roll video of dusky negroes "taking over.." Obviously a real "threat." Cut to reality. But even as white demographics shrink, they still have the "mestizo gradient" option open to them, as in Brazil and other SOuth American countries, where white will still be on top with other shades following after. Thus even if they are a numerical minority, even after some losses, the old rule will still apply: White-all right. Brown- hang around and so on.. Sounds like a great deal for white people..
On top of that, those shades farther down will still be anxious to reclassify themselves as "white" to reap the substantial social, psychic and oft economic advantages- - as many Latinos now do. This pattern ironically, bolsters white numbers due to reclassification, at least statistically. Thus on 2 counts, whites are still positioned to remain on top for quite a white with new people taking on whiteness every decade. What are they complaining about?
And who says white demographics cannot reverse itself? Trends can reverse themselves. Just because a pattern is now, doesn't mean it will be that way 100 years hence.
Even SOME dark Latinos have bought in to whiteness narratives, considering it an insult to be called "black." I once ran into a Dominican guy darker than Oprah, but he insisted he wasn't black, but was "Spanish."
The Haitian guy had a most interesting take on the issues. Haiti is the "white elephant" on the field so to speak.
Note- in saying the above I do not discount the fact that some groups are just as racist and ethnocentric as Europeans such as many Asians and Arabs. As we have oft seen on ES with cases of black women, including black American women, a black woman would likely, on average, ON THE BALANCE, receive more respectful treatment in lily white Nordic Sweden for example, than from duskier so-called "soul brothas" in Egypt or most of Arabia We should not be naive about certain realities beneath the veneer of alleged "Third World solidarity" these days..
