HomeTeam history uploaded this thought provoking vid, Did the empire of Wagadu, absolutely smoked the Umayyad Invasion, so successful elsewhere, not only that but according to reports, survivors of this invasion, aposthsized from Islam and adopted the religion of the Wagadu, this is worth exploring, because now know why they halted their advance, but to have them aposthsized against Islam to a decidedly non Abrahamic faith is really stunning..pls view, do some more research and add your comments or new info.

Hometeam History has obviously done a Africana deep dive over his lifetime.
This is an aspect of "Desert and Sown" rarely if ever brought up at all. The event is surely plausible considering a 200,000 man conscript army.
I first learned about it in an old pamphlet long out of print but again available with a different cover, African History: An Illustrated Handbook by Earl Sweeting & Lez Edmond Accra, Ghana: Star Publishing, 1962.
Will transfer info from a couple of ES posts and the illo from S & E. The little pamphlet is a must have for personal library builders not so much for the text as for the paintings depicting concepts like Afer-Amer contact, Greco-Romans learning aleph-bet and mathematics from Afrs, and an Afro-Cleopatra manipulating Ceasar and Antony.
TOURIST INFO: Wow! Sweeting sued the NEWSWEEK over, what a decade ago called, Afrocentric sloppy scholarship and fantasies of African history claims.
Wow thanks for sharing, I've never heard of Earl Sweeting, but I've seen his illustrations like forever, just didn't know of the man behind them, "we" especially me , often out of laziness took our own for granted.
I don't know what came out of the suit, but he was correct, including Cleopatra and her African bloodline, although The Afro-Amer contact should be treated as a high probability rather than a definitive fact.
One more thing convinced me , that the Umayyad got smoked, was, apart from wanting to convert non Abrahamic folks to Islam, was Wagadu was the land of GOLD!! as far as they understood it, for the only thing that can Trump religious zeal is greed or the promise of unlimited wealth which Wadagu seemed to possessed.

It's easy to be critical of the forerunners of positive independent minded African studies but without them none of the advances we take for granted today would have surfaced or even have been possible. We would still be on the level of Tarzan and Jane colonialist claptrap without them.

I'm trying to trace down further information on the Arab army that in ~734 reached the Western Sudan (i.e., Old Ghana) and per abd ul~Hakam obtained much gold booty.
But the other side to the story tells us of al~Hunayhin, remnants of that army per al~Bakri, who settled down near Ghana.
Now Sweeting and Edmond have a page showing Ghana's army routing the Arab army and if I remember rightly the text gives sources on the battle which I need.
... I've been trying to track this down again for decades, the origin of al~Hunayhin as defeated segments of abi `Ubayda's army.
[. . . .]
The particular painting I was hoping for showed the Old Ghana cavalry, their heads tied with filets, routing the Arab losers into a pall mall retreat. The text gave the sources and try as I may though I can find secondary info on that battle I can't find the source detailing the Wagadu forces armament and white headbands.

... Old Ghana (Wagadu) and the defeat and repelling of Ubayda's Arab expeditionary forces. We find the best they could do was enter into a trade relationship with Wagadu. Though it's
always written that Ubaida took what he pleased from Wagadu the fact is if he was so successful and easily won out over Wagadu then why was there no follow up conquest to incorporate it into Dar al Islam and how is it that an Arab originated ethny named Honeihin (Hunayhin) came to be in the Tagant under the Kaya Magha converting from Islam to his religion?

He wouldn't,but see a familiar pattern here, Christian Nubian forces of Makuria at Dongola cleaned their clocks also, so they decided to behave.
But in the case of Wagadu making them say uncle, even to the point of having them worshipping the old African Gods , Goddesses, ancestor spirits etc, is unique imo, yeah yeah yeah, if they switched to Judaism or Christianity, I can kinda see it. But if it's one thing all zealots of Abrahamic religions agree on, those "pagans" must go.
