I am not a Nigerian in Japan, but as a Nigerian descent perosn, I have some reasons as to why some Nigerians act this way.
Firstly, their is alot of negative stereotypes that come along with Nigerians, eg fraud etc, so many of them avoid connecting themselves with anything Nigerian, expecially when it comes to businesss
Secondly, many Nigerians back home think its 'cool' to be an Afram. In their eyes Aframs are the coolest people in the world, they even fake their accents to sound like an Afram, they fake their behaviour too. This kind of behaviour is mainly amongst the 'fresh' Nigerians i.e the ones who grew up and lived most of their live sin Nigeria, without the 'westernised' mindsets. When they travel abroad, some of them act really fake. Its a bad habit I have noticed from many Nigerians, the feake accents, fake personas. It gets a little annoying.
Thats just my two cents on this issue.

It is hilarious they want to disconnect form their nationality and culture and emulate a sub-culture that is not a good influence in people.

I know its real funny. But I have to mention that not all of Afram culture is negative. If you are familiar with AFram culture you will see many are very well mannered and well cultured especially down south (in my opinion). Louisiana and Texas have unique culture.
I will also add that its not only Africans who emulate Afram culture. I noticed that the emulation of Afram culture goes beyond 'race', I have seen 'Latinos' as well as many other people who emulate negative aspects of Afram culture, e;g excplicit ganster rap etc.. Even Lebanese in Australia are all 'acting' gangster, listening to hip hop etc,. I think young ethnic minorities accross the world tend to adopt an urban rebelious culture because they feel abandoned by the government.
I think this particular topic is mainly focusing on why Nigerians in Japan fake their nationality. IMO , I think it definately has something to do with the negative sterotypes that Nigerians have. (Even though faking one's identity contributes to that negativity). LOL

It is hilarious they want to disconnect form their nationality and culture and emulate a sub-culture that is not a good influence in people. Nigerian Culture www.heretical.com/cannibal/nigeria.htmlOil revenues account for 80 to 90% of Nigeria’s income, around $8.5 billion each year. An unbridled and often ill-considered "development" that has taken place, particularly in the cities, fuelled by what appeared to be an endless source of oil money is one of the negative sides of the country. As a result many Nigerian cities are sprawling, congested and as ugly as hell. Overcrowding, pollution, noise, traffic chaos, a soaring crime rate and the inadequacy of public utilities combine to make most urban centers hellholes. Nigerian roads are dangerous and traveling at night is as sensible as playing Russian roulette. Speeds of 150km/h are not unusual. us-africa.tripod.com/nigeria.html

LOL I agree, A.A culture is "emulated" because it is seen as something different than the normal "White" culture nothing more nothing less. Some MExicans and other Latinos might emulate blacks but they are a product of their enviroment which 9 times out of 10 is poverty. The whites I know who live in the country and say "Nigga" are different from Mexicans who live in the SouthSide or Eastside that say Nigga, some of these Hispanics are straight up Thugs associated with the Mexican Mafia, MS13, Allahons, etc. Saying they act black is misleading and racist. Also where in Louisiana and Texas are you talking about specifically, the Urban Areas(Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio)..or the country?? Also Louisiana blacks are different than Texas blacks culturally, alot of Louisiana blacks are creole.

Hey Jari
With regards to the questions asked. I am not a big expert on American culture. But from little first hand experience with Aframs, I noticed that those from the country appear a little more traditional (as in old fashioned ) . But your correct that those that live in cities may act differently.
Also I never mentioned anywhere that Latinos act 'black' not sure where you read that. I said they emulate 'Afram' gangster style culture.
Yes creoles may have different culture from Texans, nontheless they are both Southern and i am sure they have more similarities than differences.

Well I was just wondering to see who exactly you meant because as you say the Country blacks are more traditional, I guess I never noticed it. Also alot of the Hip Hop culture is Urban almost 95% of Rappers are Urban, even the Southern Rappers are from ATL, Houston, Dallas etc. As far as Latinos go Im not saying you said it but some people particularly white people think Hispanics act black when in fact many Hispanics come from the same Poverty conditions that "Thuggish" blacks do. Black gangs are different than Hispanics but I agree on what you are saying that in general Hispanics do emulate the black gangster style.

I do see where your coming from. I dont blame you for having such harsh feelings towards Nigerians. I can be quite condescending myself without even realising. I was raised in an environment where criticisms were immense. So I guess thats something i picked.
I hate to think that Nigerians talk shit about Aframs to other races. Maybe they are just seeking some kind of approval from other races. Thats insecurity for sure.
I think the word you were looking for is 'Akata'. This word takes on many different meanings. It means 'a loose cat' in Yoruba (someone who has no home). Nigerians in USA refer to Aframs as 'Akata', but guess what? Nigerians back home refer to Nigerians in USA as 'Akata' LOL. Its one crazy vicious circle of hypocrisy.Their are many Nigerians who get singled out by other Nigerians for being to loose, to Westernised, not Nigerian enough etc, .
One thing your also forgetting is that many Aframs dont seem very welcoming to AFricans. Ever heard of the term 'African booty scratcher'? Aframs can be just as racist and condescending towards Africans (even worse sometimes). Now tell me if your a newly arrived immigrant that feels vulnerable and you look to other blacks for comfort or friendship, and those blacks just tease you , how would you feel? Their is a reason many AFrican immigrants dont feel connected to Aframs. Some are bitter by how they have been treated by Aframs whilst others are just simply arrogant and ignorant.
Aframs should not feel singled out by Nigerians. If you must know Nigerians are much hated in South Africa and some other parts of Africa. I know a Ghanian guy who can spend 24 hrs/day insulting Nigerians. lol.
Who is Yonis? What is E.S? Yes some Somalis are a little bit like Nigerians - too much pride , criticising every other people, the difference is that Nigerians also criticise their own.

Since we have a member living in Japan (anansi), I would like to open a thread dealing with the behaviour of several continental Africans in Japan. I know that a few years ago, in Tokyo at least, many of them (especially Nigerians and Ghanaians) were seriously claiming to everyone there (even to their partners) to be Black Americans or Jamaicans and were dressing like stereotypical Urban Black Americans. I have never been in Japan, but having studied Japanese language and culture for about six years, this is an issue I have been interested in for a long time. Could anansi inform us if this practice is still alive nowadays? Has he an opinion about why Africans in Japan act in such a way? well it's mostly in Tokyo and Osaka you will find that happening and it's done mostly for economic reasons, those around districts like Roppongi are into the high energy dance club or reggae clubs/bars as a business so it's away of establishing street creds with both the Japanese and AAs especially from the Bases,I know those who lives in my city Fukuoka are owners of boutiques, thrift shops and mens clothing stores they are solid in their demeanor as real Nigerians. But I do wish someone would open an authentic Nigerian restaurant in my city show casing Nigerian culture,we have Moroccan and Ethiopian but Nigerians and Ghanaians despite being well represented nil . By the way something similar is taking place in New York most of the run of the mill Sushi Bars/Japanese restaurants are actually owned by Koreans[ Shocking to Japanese tourist when they placed an order in Japanese only to be met with blank stares ], the high end expensive one are Japanese so it's all about the Dollar/Yen.

One thing your also forgetting is that many Aframs dont seem very welcoming to AFricans. Ever heard of the term 'African booty scratcher'? Aframs can be just as racist and condescending towards Africans (even worse sometimes). You have to understand that alot of times African Americans look at the fact that Africans sold us into slavery, and some Africans come here with a certain mindset because in Africa if you decend from slaves even generations back its looked at as inferior. Alot of African American scholars back in the day did not consider Africans as part of the African American identity, they saw the condensation and so sought to excude Africans from the Black American Identity, this is why Malcolm X made a sermon on how "Our African brothers and Sisters don't hate us, they love us"..etc. So again it goes back to earlier times when the few Africans that migrated to the Americas were not only condensending but the African American intellegentcia did not trust them.
As far as the African Booty scratcher, that is pure ignorance, people who say that are stupid. I can tell you many black Americans even though we are not born on the Soil of Africa are very defensive of insults like that. Look at what happened when that Geneticist said Africans had low I.Q because of the conditions in Africa, A.A could have eaisly said We ARE NOT AFRICANS..but we did not we defended Africans and pointed out the obvious damage done by European colonial greed.
I think the word you were looking for is 'Akata'. This word takes on many different meanings. It means 'a loose cat' in Yoruba (someone who has no home). Its one crazy vicious circle of hypocrisy.Their are many Nigerians who get singled out by other Nigerians for being to loose, to Westernised, not Nigerian enough etc, . Yeah thats the word, my friend thought it was "Katos" like "Gato" the Spanish word for cat, but when I put the word in Google search engine it led to a Nigerian Forum where they said it means something similar to the meaning "gringo".
Aframs should not feel singled out by Nigerians. If you must know Nigerians are much hated in South Africa and some other parts of Africa. I know a Ghanian guy who can spend 24 hrs/day insulting Nigerians. lol.

Sorry I thought you were a former Egyptsearch(E.S) poster(the original version of this site). Yonis is a Somali living in Sweden who had a habit of talking down on West Africans and "Bantus" and Ethiopians, despite the fact tat Bantus, Ethiopians, and West Africans all created civilizations unlike Somalis. The kid even said once that he would follow the white man and his civilization(he rarely critisized whites which Im not advocating but Damn he always called Somali Bantus Ugly).
