www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tvFAFUbRyQ Just wanted to give the members of ESR heads up about a new PBS spacial with Dr. Louis Henry Gates called " Black In Latin America" . It airs April 19, & 26, May3, & 10, 8 p.m. ET on PBS. Check your local listing for times & channel. I hope we here at ESR could have some dialogue about the series, for with the new census out with Hispanic at 50 million, this is the perfect time to deconstruct the racism among us all. It looks like Dr. Gates will help with his new series !

No one has watched this yet??!!
I haven't watched it but i've read the write up on the pbs site. Seems like it was a good docu series. I'll try to watch and post a response. Glad they did this series tho because afro-latinos are not well known by the mainstream. (It doesn't help that many if not most of them deny their african roots).

Africurious,
I watched the whole series when aired, than I went & bought the Blu-ray dvd series from the PBS website. It is an excellent series packed with great information known & unknown about these Latin American countries & there African descendants . Dr. Henry Louis Gates( Skip ) does a wonderful job of extracting pertinent information from all those he interviews.
I highly recommend this series for its educational & cultural value for those that want a more nuanced, historical understanding of our brothers & sisters in these Latin American countries.

I meant to say "not well known" above instead of "well known". I corrected it. Yea Nebsen I've wanted to watch this series for a while and have never gotten to it. I checked out the link you posted above and came across this related video below of palo mayombe in cuba. About 30secs to a min in the video you can see a kalunga sign drawn on a wall in the background. The african culture is still strong there. I hope to visit one day soon. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nvJVK-u4Tg&feature=youtube_gdata_player

How do you infer that most Afro-Latinos deny their African Roots? I have gone to work with ,had as customers, and attended college with Cubanos, Puerto Ricanos, & Dominicanos who did not seem ashamed of having African Roots. It depends on who you are talking with yet some African Americans surely enjoy having an ancestor stolen and shipped to the US years ago. I did view most of these documentaries, they were interesting and informative.

But do you honestly think that the deep seated tribal spirit within man will be so easily eroded and extinguished if we just simply have a "dialogue"? Any man that stands before me and declares himself to be without prejudice or bias is a man of dishonest heart and tounge (not in reference to anyone here).

It has been a while that I wrote this , so still trying remember my frame of mind when I wrote it. Because of the census i might been saying it is a good time to talk & dialogue about such matters. Now I'm "not naive e enough to think just a dialogue will vanish all forum of racism , if you remember Clinton's in his last years in office had a" National Dialogue On Race" which was just that & nothing more; but it is a good first start. Many people esp.( Euro- American) a term that was used in those dialogues to get away from the White, Black binary are so terrified of such discussions that we are now more mired in racial dysfunction, more than ever. What I still believe & feel that it's not just a Black White binary, but we need to have the courage, to have a inter racial dialogue among other groups of color as well. We all have been marinating in 400 + years of colonial, white racism, of divide & conquer among different so called" Racial" groups . Many among us have ingested this" poison " of coloruism, shadeism & the like, to curry favor of the" Master " & to think one is better than the other do to color or, origin .

I was to young to be aware of Clinton's presidency in the 90s (I was born in 96) so I will have to look up that up. I can agree with much of what you said however let us not pretend as if in-group preference or self-segregation does not exist. Man by nature is tribal, no matter how high he ascends or no matter how far removed from tribalism he thinks himself to be it is entrenched and ingrained within his nature to be tribal. Whether it be divisions along the lines of race, class, social status, religion, political factions, or national identity (place of origin) man by design is tribal and he associates with those whom are most like him. Also how would you define "Divide and Conquer"? Because in my opinion you couldn't divide what was never truly united.

Yes, man can be very tribal , but I believe humanity is moving towards synthesis, it might not be in your life time, but if this planet is to survive the old tribalism must give way to a larger integration of humanity. Your generation the millennial's are less rigid about race, class, religion , sexual orientation, than the Baby-bombers( my generation) or the generation before . Studies have shown that their are more multiracial marriages,& children being born in America than any other time. Even in Africa there is much talk about how tribalism has been a huge obstacle for the unification & development of the continent . Large mass migrations of people around the world whether one likes it or not, is taking place due to wars, climate change etc. Boarders are going to be looked at in ways that it was not in the past . Beginning of world upheaval , I believe, is starting, like never before. If humanity is to survive nations will have to corporate & unify in ways that is unimaginable to us today, & the tribalism that you speak us will be history. some time we parrot in thinking what our forbears thought which in a lots of ways is very limited , I have been one who never bought into that way of seeing & thinking, got into a lots of trouble because of it in school etc. but never regretted it . Not that long ago people would have never thought in a thousands years that we would have DNA analysis as we do today; showing us the complex DNA history that many of us carry in our genes, due to mixing with other groups with-in continents & without !

Not that long ago people would have never thought in a thousands years that we would have DNA analysis as we do today; showing us the complex DNA history that many of us carry in our genes, due to mixing with other groups with-in continents & without ! Would you not consider your own ideals and aspirations of a more "integrated" world (because as we know the peoples of this planet have been aware of each other and have had extensive contact for quite sometime exchanging cultural ideas, technology, diplomatic exchanges, etc.) to be limited in some ways, while I agree concerning Africa and the issues of tribalism being a concern of progress for the continent although I would argue that the destruction of pre-colonial borders, states, etc and the formation of imaginary borders forcefully integrating competing tribes has played a role in the fierce competition that we see still being played out today (although we within the US diaspora have our own issues with tribalism i.e. gangs so I wouldn't spend so much time being concerned with the spec of dust in the eyes of others while we show little concern over the plank in our own). Anyway as I pointed out tribalism does not only exist in the form of ethnic/racial tensions but also social status, class, national identity i.e. Americans vs. British so even if we were to simply meld into an amalgamated mass these things will always exist as they have always and concerning the statistics of the rise of interracial marriage, honestly speaking I don't care because simply it isn't anything new or "progressive" and although I myself do not approve of such unions however I am not one to dissuade one of their personal decisions but me personally I wish for children's faces to reflect my own and the faces of my forefathers and their precursors plus I like my brown sugar and black coffee so I'm the least bit interested in comingling my blood with others although I won't be one to deny the attractiveness of women of other races if I find one to be so.

I’ve been to Latin countries with significant African descendants and African descendants there are looked down upon and the more African features you have the more you’re discriminated against even by people who also are Afro-Latinos. Of course it depends on who you talk with but that doesn’t change that they generally down play their africanness. And how do african Americans “enjoy” their ancestors’ being “stolen and shipped”? Get outta here with the strawman and irrelevant argument.
