www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzDfEn1R77UA friend came by to visit me Friday . We started talking about black films esp. "The Help & Red Tails". He said that he did not enjoy "The Help" at all. Many folks are very divided over this film, 'The Help" & It's portrayal of black women doing that period( 60's). Many feel it was another Hollywood film to soothe white guilt . I have not seen the film, but know Viola Davis( lead role) is a brilliant actor & brings much depth & dignity to any role she inhabits. But my friend was telling me about a New Wave French film did in the 60's about an African maid in France, that was a far deeper an richer film, it is called " Black Girl" . I found it on You Tube & it is a rich small film that has a shocking ending ! It is a film that explores subject matters that ones reads about in the news today ! It was directed by Sembene Ousmane, " The Father of Sub Saharan African Cinema". In fact this this is his very first full length feature film (1966 ?). It is just excellent as far as I'm concerned ; it's is in 4 parts I'm providing the first part here. Sembene Ousmane is a master film maker & this is a MUST SEE FILM !

www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrcX3XUm7eA It is good to see that members on the forum are checking out "Black Girl," a very powerful small film. The film by Sembene Ousmane is heavy with symbolism which is the African way. One that I caught & I hope others did, was a scene with the actress love interest a( flash back scene) is smoking a cigarette with a cloth of a picture of Patrice Lumumba in the back round. Now Patrice Lumumba is a hero to many, including myself ! For those that are not that familiar with this great African freedom fighter I have posted a small doc that was on You Tube about him above.
