filmclique.com/2012/can-hollywood-too-accept-that-the-ancient-egyptians-were-black-ascension-british-adventure-mini-eyes-idris-elba-for-imhotep/----------------------------------------------------------- Debate over who the ancient Egyptians were has raved on for centuries amid the tense racial relations of the past 400 years. Lo and behold, it seems the sheer volume of evidence now has made it impossible to deny what was – that Kermit, Ancient Egypt, was not only an African Civilization, it was in fact Black. It is only fitting then that the new British miniseries, Ascension, eyes Idris Elba to play the most revered Academic of Africa’s historical past – Imhotep. In priestly wisdom, in magic, in the formulation of wise proverbs; in medicine and architecture; this remarkable figure (Imhotep) of Zoser‘s reign left so notable a reputation that his name is not forgotten to this day. He was the patron spirit of the later scribes, to whom Africans regularly poured out a libation from the water-jug of their writing outfit before beginning their work. James Henry Breasted. According to Deadline, British producer Vivek J. Tiwary (The Fifth Beatle) and writer Warren Ellis (Red) have teamed up for the adventure/thriller miniseries, Ascension, which revolves around the history and future of astronomy and mankind’s impulse for the stars. Idris Elba is double-starring in the project, as the Egyptian polymath Imhotep in 3000 B.C. as well as a brilliant astronomer in the near future. Imhotep is credited with many things. First, for being the founder of medicine and with being the author of a medical treatise remarkable for being devoid of magical thinking. Hence we owe the all-powerful formula in Science and Research, the Scientific Method, to this man. Tiwary and his wife, Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary of Hunter College of the City University of New York, base this on an original idea they had a while back. Ascension is co-created by Tiwary and Ellis, with Ellis writing the script. Elba will executive produce it. With this growing awareness about the true beginnings of Science, one of these days when a Jesus film is also remade, perhaps we will be offered the real Christ – a man whose feet were like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace (Rev.1:15). Not that it mattered what color of skin anyone was, but since it matters now – in a racist society – it is only moral that we correct the intentional recalibration of the color of great past civilizations and re-inscribe the faded historical records of entire black cultures that were lost, burnt and plagiarized, for example. This can only be a positive step towards making the world a fine place so that perhaps, every race of people can have the confidence that they have contributed immensely towards its conception and advancement. ----------------------------------------- The Truth shall set us free!

Eeeeexecellent! Eeeexecellent! MJ's video for remember the time was the only mainstream depiction of AE's that fully embraced their blackness. But that was at the whim of one man (MJ himself). But this is something more. A series with a know actor, known creative types behind it, and mainstream in everyway, yessss! Hopefully, we will see more of this.
Anansi, There are so many african legends that are there to be made in mainstream flicks. I'm just itching for someone to make them. I hate the mainstream stuff for their lack of reality (when it comes to historical events) but we need it to combat all that white-wash of history that we see. And as more of these flicks portraying black historical figures/peoples who've been white-washed come out, it'll spark debate and ppl will research. And more ppl will become aware of the truth.

What African folk tales hero myth/legends would you guys like to see brought to the big screen, I can think of Osi Tutu the hero founder of the Ashanti empire here you have every thing an illicit affair resulting in pregnancy a golden stool given by the gods,a power grab, wars of conquest and revenge, all set in an exotic African landscape with folks dressed in colorful attire. Sundiata Keita born a cripple to an ugly hunched back woman teased and abused as a child for both had 11 of his brothers killed by the evil king Samanguru but left alive because he thought the boy would have died anyway,I mean come on this screen play is practically writing itself! Then there is the Kemetian classic of the tale of two ship wrecked brothers who ended up on an Island ruled by a half woman half snake on their journey to Punt. please add your own wish list there has got to be a screen writer produce type looking for fresh ideas to be brought to life on the silver screen.

Maybe too touchie a subject for the socio-political climate for the time being, think about this for a sec, black men who are Muslims ruling over parts Europe.. yikees!! Better off doing Christian Axum or St Maurice. I mean hell they didn't even want to back Lucas and Glover for their movies Red tails and Toussiant Olivier.

Anansi,
You asked "what African folk tales, hero, myth/legends, would you guys like to see brought to the big screen". You did not ask what politically correct themes we would like to see today ! I really don't think the mainstream powers that be in Hollywood would be ready to make any of the themes I out lined, or yours for that matter, today ! As you see this film series is British that Idris Elba would portray Imhotep, not American( Hollywood) The British seem to be coming to terms with the fact that ancient Egypt was an African (Black) civilization as seen by the Fitzwilliams Museum much faster than here in the states. So if a major institution such as Cambridge is willing to see ancient Egypt as African thus Black civilization, it lays down a powerful acknowledgment that has to be taken seriously ! !

Good stuff. Not holding my breath though. What happened to "Cleopatra" starring Hallie Berry? I'm also still waiting on "The Last Pharaoh" starring Will Smith. One film that I can't wait to see, and that looks like it's making some headway, is "Toussaint", directed by Danny Glover. www.imdb.com/title/tt0785063/^Should be epic!
