Okay...I knew about this for a while, but decided to finally post all of this. But I want to wonder why this is not talked about much and by Africanist? Why??? This proves that African Americans were not just slaves, not cowards but resisted slavery all through and that the USA government had to ban slavery not due to the civil war but the Gullah wars. This really did happen and yet many don't know or rarely touch base on it. Many people think of African American history as just being slave history, but this totally debunks that, this shows African American history in a new and different light that we have barely heard of. The Haitians, Jamaicans and Brazilians were not the only ones who had successful slave revolts in the New World. African Americans can be put on that list too and we're not talking about Nat Turner but something big. This is not Afrocentric nonsense that I am about to show(or else I wouldn't even be posting it), but something very important that is needed of MUCH ATTENTION.

Oh I knew the story going all the way back to J.A Rogers and especially the book Black Indians by William Katz,
I don't know why this story have not been made into a movie or even a proper documentary since that's how most of the young gains knowledge

The story of John Horse Cohia sub cheif to chief Coacoachee or Wild Cat is one of inspiration they were at war with the United States for 20yrs in an heroic struggle to find a place to called home.

Yeah, but Nat Turners slave revolt wasn't on a grand scale like those of the Black Seminoles.

Another side to this story is that during the war for Independence many simply took up arms and joined the British who promised them freedom,now we have to realize that these men were not traitors as they were never citizens of any nation of free will in the first place,so they took freedom or the promise of it in whatever form or alliance it took.

African American soldiers served with valor at the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill. In November 1775, however, Congress decided to exclude blacks from future enlistment out of a sensitivity to the opinion of southern slaveholders. But Lord Dunmore's promise of freedom to slaves who enlisted in the British army led Congress reluctantly to reverse it decision, fearful that black soldiers might join the redcoats.

African Americans played an important role in the revolution. They fought at Fort Ticonderoga and the Battle of Bunker Hill. A slave helped row Washington across the Delaware. Altogether, some 5,000 free blacks and slaves served in the Continental army during the Revolution. By 1778, many states, including Virginia, granted freedom to slaves who served in the Revolutionary war.

The American Revolution had profound effects on the institution of slavery. Several thousand slaves won their freedom by serving on both sides of the War of Independence. As a result of the Revolution, a surprising number of slaves were manumitted, while thousands of others freed themselves by running away. In Georgia alone, 5000 slaves, a third of the colony's prewar total, escaped. In South Carolina, a quarter of the slaves achieved freedom.

Both the British and the colonists believed that slaves could serve an important role during the revolution. In April 1775, Lord Dunmore (1732-1809), the royal governor of Virginia, threatened that he would proclaim liberty to the slaves and reduce Williamsburg to ashes if the colonists resorted to force against British authority. In November, he promised freedom to all slaves belonging to rebels who would join "His Majesty's Troops...for the more speedily reducing the Colony to a proper sense of their duty...." Some eight hundred slaves joined British forces, some wearing the emblem "Liberty to the Slaves." The British appeal to slave unrest outraged slaveholders not only in the South but in New York's Hudson Valley. Later, Sir Henry Clinton (1738-1795) promised protection to all slaves who deserted from the rebels. Clinton's promise may well have contributed to the collapse of the British cause in the South. By suggesting that the Revolution was a war over slavery, he alienated many neutrals and even some loyalists.

Aroused perhaps by British promises of freedom, slaves in Pitt and Beaufort counties tried to break the chains of bondage. In July 1775 the Pitt County Committee of Safety discovered a slave plot for an insurrection just before it was to start. A posse of one hundred men captured the suspected leaders and jailed more than forty blacks. The same month other blacks were captured along the Pitt-Craven county line. Their plan, according to the confessions (probably obtained through torture), was to “destroy the family where they lived” and then to march “from House to House (Burning as they went) until they arrived in the Back Country.” There they were to be welcomed by the British who would reward them by settling the former slaves “in a free government of their own.”
Meanwhile, in Virginia, the royal governor, Lord Dunmore, promised freedom to all the slaves and indentured servants of revolutionaries who would take up arms and fight for “His Majesty’s crown and dignity.” The effect was electric. Immediately, slaves rushed to Norfolk to join “Lord Dunmore’s Ethiopian Regiment.” Across the chest of each black soldier appeared the words LIBERTY TO SLAVES. During the winter of 1775/1776, Dunmore commanded approximately 2,000 men, half of them black. At the Battle of Great Bridge near Norfolk in December 1775, North Carolina troops under General Robert Howe fought against the combined British-black army.
Along the North Carolina coast in the spring of 1776, slaves were going over to the British. William Hooper, another of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence, sadly noted, “The [N]egroes are deserting from the Sea Coast… Three of mine were intercepted on their way and are now in Goal [jail].” The muster rolls (lists of people in military units or on ships) of British ships stationed off Cape Fear recorded the names of blacks who “deserted from the Rebels” or “fled for Protection.” The HMS Scorpion reported that thirty-six blacks, including at least eleven women, came aboard on March 3, 1776.

It makes me feel proud.
I already knew that black people didn't lay down and take abuse.
However, it's great to learn more specific dates of these events.
At the same time I'm not surprised this was kept secret.
White supremacy has tried it's hardest to erase Black history, but the TRUTH shall prevail.
