I like the look of all the weapons but the wrist knife is very ingenious. If these cultures had had guns in the beginning Euros would have been helpless.

The truth of the matter is that even with the gun, it was hundreds of years before the Europeans were able to establish colonies in Africa. Btw Firearms were invented by the chinese, it's just the motive behind their invention wasn't to suppress other nations, but for their defence and trade route dominance . But we all know what the Europeans did with this amazing discovery of gunpowder. I was planning on writing a novel about a character traveling back in time to advance the Africans a little bit when it comes to military defence lool, then I thought what about...education, science, agriculture, technology, imagine if they had the upper hand back then. Are there any fiction-books out there that tells an alternative era to a non-colonial Africa with an advanced stand point to it's civilisations? Please share if you know of one.

One thing I must note is a lot of African armies chose mobility over heavy armor, this include the kemetians my guess would be they cared not to slug it out, but to hit and do a fake retreat,if they can sucker your army into the dry hot desert having you chase after them while thinning your lines and deplete your water supply then hit you with a speedy counter attack had worked as a strategy for thousands of years right down to the general Gorden's defeat in the Sudan, the Persian suffered a greater defeat by this strategy perhaps one of the reasons Aristotle wrote: Those who are too black are cowards, like for instance, the Egyptians and Ethiopians. may stem from this frustrating approach to warfare, they hit you,you chase after them when you are tried and weak they hit you and so on.

I like the look of all the weapons but the wrist knife is very ingenious. If these cultures had had guns in the beginning Euros would have been helpless. Many African nations held their own even in the era of the gun. It was only until the coming of the most modern gunpowder weapons and systems, like steamships, anti-malaria pills, repeating rifles, rifled artillery and machine guns (Gatling and Maxim) wielded by regular imperial troops, who also worked with native collaborators and compradors, that African forces finally went down. Gun technology was important but was not the SINGLE most important factor. using time, numbers and tactics, several defeats were dealt the imperialists by indigenous forces. The example of the Zulu is well known but other peoples on a smaller scale, using guerrilla tactics held their own. But this is not only an indigenous African phenomenon, The Boers also went down against the British under the above combination, though they got special "white brotherhood" treatment after the Boer War. When you come to think of it, the major European colonial interlude in Africa was rather short - a bit less than a century and ending in the 1960s for the most part. The Portuguese were intervening earlier, but their domain was limited and their direct conquest time-period (compared to the years they had to work with African alliances) was also limited. Contrast with Roman rule over great swathes of Europe- some 500 years or more.

Its not a book but the "Black Panther" cartoon series is a hilarious take on similar lines. The Africans are as advanced as the US/Euro powers and defeat their schemes using advanced technology. Its on Youtube- Anansi may have posted the link some time ago. But you can still write that novel without a time travel twist using current info. Africans beat back a lot of outside invaders. The Nubians/Kushites for example defeated Arab and Persian forces for well nigh 600 years, after 1AD, with the mlst dangerous units being the Kushite bowmen. And they fought a least one Roman force to a standstill. You could probably write up a good novel full of sex and action based on this... lol.. The Nubian/Kushite queen or Candace for example reportedly sent the Romans a bunch of golden arrows, with a message saying: "The Candace sends you these arrows. If you want peace, they are a token of her friendship and warmth. If you want war, you are going to need them."

I think what locdiva was trying to say is that if African forces had they same weaponry (not just guns) they wouldn't have been colonized. While Zaharan makes good points about Africans succeeding in military bouts without modern weaponry in the short run, in the long run it wasn't enough. I believe it's been mentioned on here about Africans skills with repairing and wielding firearms.

Yes, there were some skilled repair people but they just didn't have the material and spare parts to work with. Repairmen in the army of Samoi Toure for example.
