Is it as easy as molding ground beef into patties or does it require lots of seasoning? Also, could I eat ackee as a substitute for eggs since ackee is a fruit? I hear ackee has the same consistency as eggs.

Ahh I am not good at pastry but someone had gave me a link on how to make good crust I'll try and dig it up for you..the inside mince meat or vegetable is easy enough just season to your taste..but the crust is key.. And Ackee would make a great substitute for eggs I some times use it to make a sandwich ..fresh thyme onions green peppers a dash of salt is all that's needed, you could add beacon if you want or I perfer salted cod fish or bacalou as the Latin Caribbean speaking community would say.

Bacalou tastes great but that smell is hard to overcome. I heard the best ackee is the canned kind since ackee poisonous. Is there a way I can order canned ackee?

Akee isn't really poisonous unless its unripened. When its ripe the pod turns red and splits open revealing the whitish yellow bulbs with big black seeds on the end. There is also a membrane in the bulbs that needs to be removed, but that's easy to do. The best way to cook it is with the cod, onions and pepers sauteed in coconut oil. The cod only smells in the stores, your house won't smell that way soak the strips in water over night to get rid of the excess salt. Only way to get Akee outside of Jamaica is canned. However, it is pricey, each can running about $12.00. You would need at least 4 to make a meal for more than one serving. A cheaper alternative for eggs is scrambled tofu. Squeeze out the excess water i a cheese cloth to make it firm. Season with garlic powder, soy sauce and some curry powder. Sautee scallions or onions, green peppers and sun dried tomatoes in coconut oil then stir in the tofu. Quick, easy, filling, delicious. Bacalou tastes great but that smell is hard to overcome. I heard the best ackee is the canned kind since ackee poisonous. Is there a way I can order canned ackee?
