The Kemetian soul
The Kemetians believed there were aspects existing in every person that were extra-physical. First their was the Ib or heart which was the will and seat of emotions, when a person's heart stopped they died. A person's heart was thought to be key to the afterlife. Next there was the sheut or shadow, which was basically their stuff, their remnant, or product, a mere result of them similar to the slang euphemism "their sh-t" -- a shadow of a person or thing (things had shadows as well) could also be used protectively. A person's ren or "name" or identity was an aspect of them that was believed to live as long as the name was read or spoken. A person's Ba or "soul" was a person's personality, any attributes were signiture of that person, including anything that you could tell was the work of the person's Ba (since it could at times be apart from them). A person's Ka was their liveliness, and is comparable to our word spirit, when the Ka left is when a person was dead. This last part is not usually considered part of a "soul" to my knowledge but: An Akh meaning "[magically] effective one" and being connected to thought and intellect but not any *action* of the mind, would seem to me to have been something similar to a genius in a sense of the word, like a genius thing about the way someone did something, but who knows.
