Special spaceship could take humans to future, Hawking
British scientist Stephen Hawking, ex professor at Cambridge University, affirmed that he believes in the possibility that, one day, humans could create a special spaceship so fast that it could travel through time, flying several generations into the future.
Hawking delves into this theory in the documentary "Stephen Hawking's Universe," which will air in the United States next Sunday, according to a newspaper source.
The scientist said that travelling into the future could be made possible based on the theories of relativity explained by Albert Einstein, who said that the passing of time slows down for objects as they accelerate in space.
For cars or planes, this effect is impossible; however, the spaceship that Hawking mentions would be completely able to experience the phenomenon due to its great speed.
According to what the newspaper published, Hawking explains that the spaceship could reach, theoretically, a speed of billions of kilometers an hour. It would have to be constructed on a giant scale in order to carry the necessary fuel.
The spaceship would travel at unthinkable speeds, and Hawking says that "at those speeds, a trip to the end of the galaxy would take 80 years for those aboard."
The scientist does not, however, believe in travelling backwards in time. He says that he knows he has lost pull within the scientific community due to these "heretic" theories, but he confirms that backwards time travel would be impossible, even through "holes" between different parts of the universe.
Hawking says in the documentary that these "holes" exist, but that on a miniscule scale: they are smaller than an atom. Thus, it would be necessary to enlarge them to the scale of a human being.
