From the book A Fist Full OF Shells
This is a complete surprise to me, a form of communication used by first world nations in the Americas was also utilized in West African coastal communities?? Wow, if anyone out there can enlighten us more in this form of communication in Africa it would be helpful.

You know I just walked past this book in the library the other day and I am going to get it. Apparently the knots have a connection with magic as well, furnishing defensive power against malevolent agents, human or other. It would not be surprising if they were also applied to practical accounting and memory work purposes. drum.lib.umd.edu/bitstream/handle/1903/7746/umi-umd-5027.pdf;sequence=1
