Great find. Some informed folk know about the giant earthworks of Benin but the buildings from Mossi and Kong, etc are new to me. He also makes the great point that the classic "big five" black Afro scholars- Diop, CLarke, Williams, etc are starting points not the final word. They laid some good foundations, but things don't stop there- knowledge in the field has moved on and interested students have to tap into new developments- they need not read every obscure article or journal but have some awareness. Along with new knowledge this may also mean confronting extreme ideologies- such as arguments that "nobody but blacks" were in Egypt until the Greeks arrived. I told one person holding such views that they were setting themselves up for failure with extreme claims - making it easy for racist detractors to debunk them. Just war captives brought into Egypt from Palestine or Lebanon from various ancient military campaigns undermined their whole spiel about a "pure" black Kemet. And there were always foreign-origin merchants, slaves, nomads etc. But then again some of these extreme claimants might be agents setting up fake "Afrocentric" strawmen to easily "refute." Anyway as Diop said back in 1974:
