Do the recent events in Lybia and the way Ghadafi has chosen to deal with the protesters shed light on Ghadafi's call for a United States of Africa? I personally think that there was a lot of truth to the things he has said, but I've always been a bit leery about him. Wandering what others think.

Ghadafi is in a world of hurt he like so many in Africa and the so-called Middle East had over stayed their time in power, but more to your question yes in some ways he took up the mantle of Nkrumah, but he is also a flake.

At one time esp. in the 60's Ghadafi was seen as a hero in the African diaspora community's around the world, esp. here in the states doing the Black power movement & beyond. Many admired the way he stood up to the western powers of Europe, & America, & called them out !
But over the years he ossified into a stale caricature of the militant revolutionary , who had lost his way due to his egomania & delusions of grandeur. Which has been on full view these last couple of days.(But there are other leaders in Africa, that could somewhat fit this description sadly) !
But for me what became alarming about Ghadafi over the years was his trying to insert himself as spoke person & leader for the new concept of the United States Of Africa.
I felt he was a wolf in sheep's clothing, & he had a hidden agenda that was about future arabicization of Africa & dominance. So I did not trust him at all. If he would turn on his own people the way he has, think about if Sub Sahara Africa fell under his spell ! The man is CRAZY ! !

Qadafi has proven himself to be a monster, better for us that we all now know him and his family for what they truly are, despots and nepotists of the worse kind, blanket murderers of innocents. If he would turn on his own people the way he has, think about if Sub Sahara Africa fell under his spell ! The man is CRAZY ! ! My feelings exactly. At first, I really admired the way he called out the US on its bullshit. There was a lot of truth to the things he said...but then.... I guess you have to not only look at what a person says, but what they do. Its easy to talk the talk, but do they walk the walk? As they say, even the devil can quote scripture. The talk about a united African States made me nervous. On the one hand, I could see how theoretically it could benifit Africa, but on the other hand, how the hell would you choose a leader? With the history of people who just don't want to get off the pot once they've settled their big a**es on it, could you really trust anyone? The thought of it going to him disturbed me and now that we see that a considerable percentage of his armed forces are made up of mercinaries from across Africa who are loyal to him only, one wonders what his long term agenda really was. You raise a good point about looking at he way he treats his own people. If a man treats his own children like step kids, what do you think he'll do to his girlfriend's children? And keeping that in mind, the increasing involvement of China in Africa worries me too for the exact same reason.

May we all live to see the day when the African states are truely liberated.

What ever one thinks about Mandela he passed the torch in a timely manner thus setting a great example for a peaceful transfer of power and regaled himself to becoming a respected elder statesman, maybe part of the problem is these men do not know what to do with themselves after being president for more than perhaps most people being alive on this board.

I think money and power will bring out what's really in a person. If you haven't dealt with your deamons, they will manifest and get stronger. Perhaps these people are inherantly insecure and once reaching the level of not having to answe to anyone, they find it hard to put themselves in a position where someone else gets to call the shots again and have control over their lives. I think Mandela had time to work through his deamons. Plus the fact that he came to power as an elder having lived and learned something about life, where as many of these other people didn't get the chance to mature emotionally in the same way. By the way, what's the latest on Lybia? Haven't been following the news the past few days.
