Anansi,
Thanks for the video's on the head Of Ife. I had read many years ago about the Europeans (British)just could not rap their brains around that Africans created these astounding natural life like head statues. After all these years they, (Europeans) still make my blood boil. because of their limited brain capacity to see other people other than themselves as brilliant & gifted !
Even today as in the video's they had to be the only experts on the matter ;with all manner of speculations of the how & why's of these statues. The paternalism just makes me sick to my stomach .I just heard a proverb the other day that is fitting. It go's something like this,"A man full of arrogance, leaves little room for intelligence or wisdom."
After they destroy the city of Ife, & steal all the art objects, than they want to know what the objects mean.
Even as I viewed the video's with all the speculations by the so called "experts". I asked myself, did it ever dawn on them, to ask the people of Ife & by that I mean the priest & priestess of Ife today, what these head could be for & why ? It seems to me..... the people of Nigeria esp. of Ife would have some knowledge about these matters, even if they are passed down as oral tradition . But oh no, all understanding must come from the European brain or else it is not valid . Give me a BREAK !!

Well part of the reason is those stolen artifacts are in their hands for generations but yes it would have been great if they could sit down with an African craftsman, btw not all the time Africans give up their knowledge easily and please check out the Benin court life vid below this one.

I did check out the video on Benin by Dr. Kathy Curnow. You can feel the respect & love that she has for the people( court) of Benin. I do understand that they do not share easily concerning certain aspect of their culture & religion, & rightly so; but if one cultivates an respectful relationship as Dr. Kathy Curnow over the years, Africans like any other people are more apt to share with you as a extended member of the group. That seems to be the missing ingredient with the British of the 19th century as well as even today !
