video.pbs.org/video/2365324865/PBS is getting ready to air, I believe for the very first time a program called" Rise Of the Black Pharaohs" about the 25th dynasty of ancient Egypt, which we all know was the Kushite dynasty. But as usual, they are making a big , big, distinction between the" Black African Kushites" & the ancient Egyptians, like they lived on separate planets ,& not along the Nile. Just from the preview as most of you here on ESR can tell, are a bunch of lies, & distortions . They are packaging this like all this is new & something they just discovered ! They must feel the masses are very gullible esp. the " uneducated black masses". This is a very cynical" snow job" for the masses to consume; I believe because they are preparing for the Release Of" God & Kings" by Ridely Scott, soon . They know their is going to be a public backlash about this film esp. from the Black communities here & abroad (which has already started) ! I noticed last week they have began to show previews of this film with the director Ridely Scott talking about" Gods & Kings", they are" nervous! By a program like " Rise Of The Black Pharaohs" they are hoping to placate us Black folks to pave the way for Gods & Kings . I sense " National Geographic" as the puppet master here( The big boys of media all stick together). It's strange that a program like this, would not be be aired during Black History month in February; which they refuse not to air anything about ancient Egypt, not alone ancient Kush- Nubia, during Black history month, at least on my local PBS stations , that's why I have never given them a dollar during pledge month ! ! Please if they air this on your local PBS station email them with your disapproval, & let them know we are not all idiots. Also they are going to try to appeal to you;" that Look, we are doing archeology here for you; discovering all these wonderful facts about a lone forgotten civilization that was" Black" & conquered a" non Black " high civilization like ancient Egypt They are pretending like they are being" altruistic" in presenting this information, which has a "TROJAN HORSE" BURIED IN IT !

Yeah I remembered that vid they tried to make non Blacks out of Kemites, all this came on the heals of the Ntl Geo-article about Black Pharaohs that is always annoying to me but that's why we are here to set the record straight and put things into perspective if needs be.

Did not know this has aired before" Rise Of The Black Pharaohs" on PBS around the time of the National Geographic release of the Black Pharaohs issue . I might have blocked it out of my mind, or something. I live on the West Coast & my local PBS Station which prides themselves as very Liberal to progressive, have never to my knowledge did any programs with the words" Black & Egypt" in the same sentence! The closes they have got was to air Louis Henry Gates series he did on" Africa" in the late 90's where they talked about Nubia is the place that A.A should be studying & visiting. Which they did go to the Sudan, & visit the pyramids of Meroe & Temples in the series.

Sorry Nebsen I thought it was this one your link is that of a new documentary..wow so they are still at it framing Kemet and Kush as Black vs non Black this with all the hoopla over Gods and Kings if I were a conspiracy theorist I'd say this was all well timed not unlike the Ntl Geo and the doc above me of a few yrs past.

This is such bullshit. What's so shocking? Anyone who has a basic knowledge of Egyptian history knows of the 25th Dynasty. Anyone who knows anything about Egypt knows that the 25th Dynasty was a time of the restoration of Egyptian culture and civilization, not a decline. It was simply the last wave of southern kings who rose up to expell the rule of foreign invaders. The premise is total crap, but they might actually have some good information about the Dynasty itself. We'll know soon enough...

Truthteacther2007, you are right they might have some good information on the Dynasty itself. But the way they are framing it,puts a sour taste in my mouth already. Like I stated, this program is a Trojan Horse, which is to keep the historical lie about ancient Egypt in place, while finally acknowledging ancient Kush & the 25th Dynasty. They are going to spin it the only the way they can, some real facts, here & there with a large dose of distortion & downright lies ; for they feel the general viewing public are not sophisticated enough esp. the white viewing public who have been fed since they were born, that ancient Egypt was white or at least middle Eastern( Arabic). But because the winds of change they do feel ; that ancient Egypt can not really be studied with out ancient Kush-Nubia for Nubiology is fast becoming a field that thy most acknowledge, & in doing so will have to see the interconnectedness between the ancient Kushites & The ancient Egyptians. It would be like studying ancient China, without ancient Mongolia. That's why I feel, we must let them know PBS, that we are paying attention to what they are giving us, the viewing public. Sometimes they have a comment board attached to a certain program, if so lets comment,or email, let them know when they get it right, & let them know when they get it all wrong ! It's time to let our voices be heard, or one will never get any respect. They are testing the waters, if quiet , they will continue with the Staus Quo ! !

All I can say is, hey, It's National Geographic, I'd be surprised if they got it right. What I did like though, was the fact that they showed that Nubian civilization was on a par with Egypt both in the pre dynastic and early dynastic period. I didn't know how old the dafufas were. So it shows that they were not primitives at all. However, there was a lot of coded langage and projecting back in time. One archologist made the statement that there was racial profiling against the Nubians. How could that be when a significant percentage of Egyptians were just as dark as Nubians. You can still see that dynamic today. The tensions between the two peoples had nothing to do with skin color, but with politics. What they feared was being conquered by another kingdom. It's the same reason why there were tensions with the Lybians and Asiatics. Honestly, until we push the issue, no one is going to take the trouble to tell the truth. Every now and then, someone tells a bit of truth, like the program that looked at theidentity of the Sphinx. It would take someone like Henrey Louis Gates to do it, but frankly, I don't think he has the balls to do it.

That whole profiling thing was such a distortion; for one the ancient Egyptians vilified all their enemies, be they Kushites or Asians; they used propaganda very well, & might have been one of the first nations to do so. I thought the production value was very high. I found it ironic that they started out by talking about George Reisner the first to excavate using modern methods in the Sudan labeling him as a" racist" when they themselves, National Geographic, was doing the same thing in a different & more sophisticated way. One bright spot among a handful for me was, they talked about Taharqa, & the " Rescue of Jerusalem" which was the very first time I have heard that mentioned on PBS, or any other broadcast which was a game changer. It was great to see the only two Black Sudanese archeologist among a sea of whites. I might even purchase this National Geographic program on DVD, which will not change my disdain for National Geographic !

I might even purchase this National Geographic program on DVD, which will not change my disdain for National Geographic ! Change is inevitable so long as there is intent behind it. The fact that they even touched the subject at all is significant. By the way, I thought the same thing about them calling Reisner a racist. Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black, (no pun intended). He couldn't see the Cushites as Africans and they can't see the Egyptians as Africans. Then they tried to imply that Egyptians were trying to hide the 25th Dynasty by showing the omittion of the 25th Dynasty on the facade of the Cairo Museum. The museum was built by the colonial British, not the Egyptians themselves, so it was the Brits, not the Egyptians who did the deed. Every Egyptian tour guide I've ever had was emphatic that the 25th Dynasty was a time of Egyptian cultural renewal. In their words, "they saved us". This is a point the documentary did not address. It's sad, and ironic that in so many ways the British are ahead of us in telling the truth. I can't remember his name, but there was a British scholar who made a documentary in which he emphatically pointed out the Egyptians were Africans. He was very to the point and said straight up they were Black. I avoid using that term for the fct that every culture has a different idea of what that means. African, or Native African skips over all of that confusion. I wish someone like Tyler Perry or Oprah would fund a documentary examining not only the African identity of the Egyptians, but the reasons why it has been such a controversal topic.

Truthteacher2007, Yes, I agree with you, but Oprah I feel would not be interested in such a documentary, but she might help support such a concept. Such a documentary needs to be done someone like this British Brother, who did the documentary in 2008 "Nubian Spirit", Louis Buckley with his production company Black Nine , would be right for such a project, for he is courageous, & has no fear. Also the white British historian I believe you are referring to is Basil Davidson, who was much loved by many in our community & out side of it, he passed on to become an ancestor about 2009. A friend of mine who was studying archeology at US Berkley Ca she turned me on to this series some years back " African A Voyage Of Discovery" it was did almost 20 years ago On BBC , but still holds up today, this is part 1 of 8 P.S. PBS would never air this series, for like you stated, Britain is way ahead of the states ! here is a link to" Black Nine Films" blackninefilms.com/

Hello everybody I am Kaskata; I have to agree with all the posting regarding the new PBS/ Nat Geo documentary that recently aired. After a few web search, I have discovered that Nat Geo is under the same umbrella as Fox news and 21st century fox studios. This is the same studio that's behind the up coming movie, God and kings. I am sure you all remember the new face of king tut nonsense by Nat Geo, Jesus was white by Kelly M from fox news and now this upcoming movie. The studio is well aware of the criticism regarding their choice of cast. I read somewhere online, the director does not really want to be asked about the casting. The only thing he said in his defense, in his native Australia, far from the fire storm, was that he only works with his friends.

Yes, I had a deep suspicion that their was a tie in with the film" Gods & Kings" & this documentary " Rise Of The Black Pharaoh " , by " National Geographic". like I have said, the big boys of media stick together. I put nothing past these big media conglomerates when it comes to maintaining power over the masses & their is nothing more powerful than the media of film ! thanks for your investigative work

Egyptology has it's roots in colonialism and imperialism. It was heavily biased at its birth and still has residue of this. White middle class people, even well meaning ones, seem to be over represented in the field. More needs to be done to allow people of different backgrounds to access higher education in general and be active agents in building their own narratives. A few years ago, I was friends with a former UCL Egyptology graduate. All the people she had studied with were white European, and predominately middle class. I got the impression from her that when black people were into Egypt and Nubia it was Afrocentric and if Egyptian people took an interest in it they were just viewed as being nationalistic. It annoys me that there is this arrogant/biased attitude amongst some in academia that they feel only they are capable of understanding the past and having ownership of it.

Your post is very much right on target. It really bothers me that we see so few if any persons of African decent or color on these so called educational programs about Egypt. I to had a friend who was African American& studied archeology at UC Berkley . She told me that she was the only Black person in most of her classes & the only women in many, & how lonely it was. She was one smart cookie, but lost contact with her years ago. Some of these Egyptologist, I some times wonder, where in the hell did they get them from, most mediocre at best. But it's about universities & colleges with money who can afford to send these folks to Egypt, & the Sudan on these digs. I have heard that Howard university has some very promising young Black folks who are studying Egyptology in the pipe line.I guess we will have to wait & see. It is strange that they will never have or show Dr.Shomarka Ketia on any of these programs for he is above reproach & is well respect both in the states & Britain . So they cheery pick only those who will deliver their Eurocentric view points on ancient Egypt & now Kush- Nubia. You are so right, about their arrogance & bias, if only they could open themselves up to the wonderful talented persons of African decent& othres who have been studying for years on ancient Egypt & Kush & could bring in many fresh new concepts & view points that could broaden every ones horizons. They discount many just because they have not attended a elite University & have not studied in these universities Egyptology dept. Racism at work at it's most diabolical, & cynical manner.
