Thats interesting indeed. Just shows how far people of the diaspora ended up from home. I wonder how many other's found themselves in unlikely places. If it weren't for the fact that Pushkin became so famous, we might not have known anything about this man at all. So what about the not famous at all? Wonder how many of them there were that just blended in to the societies they found themselves in and were then lost to time? We'll that i think is stretching it a bit. However, it is a human trait to puff yourselves up even if it means spinning some tall tales. My grand father was found of telling people he was Hawaiian, don't ask me why . Truth was his family was creole from Martinique. I think some people just want to feel special and dread the thought of being "ordinary". It's probably what drives people to become entertainers isn't it? Well I agree that is improbable that he was a descendant of Hannibal the Carthaginian one source suggested that the early Soviets were the ones making that connection other than the man himself despite his name. Ahh the good old Soviet propaganda machine! Remember the good old days before Al'Qaida, the threat of global warming and rising sea levels and the economic melt down, when all we had to worry about was nuclear annihilation?

Russia is a bit of an enigma. The racism in Russia is left over from the Mongol rule which left the people there scarred for life. They became very distrusting of foreigners ever since then, especially Asiatic looking people.

They became very distrusting of foreigners ever since then, especially Asiatic looking people. Which would explain why they seemed particularly violent towards the Central Asians. I think hatred of this type is always fear based.
