Truthteacher2007, I have heard this same sentiment over, & over, again on different blogs concerning the " stiff upper lip "approach to not getting recognized by ones peers. But human nature being what it is, folks like to be recognized for their work & efforts. The film director of Selma the most gifted & talented Ava Duvernay I heard say last week talking about Selma that she felt that she would not be nominated & she was O.K with that, but felt David Oyelowo should have gotten at least a nod from the " Academy" . I think what he is saying is that over the many, many ,years of people of African decent not being recognized, or acknowledged, & when they were, it is playing subservient roles( The Help) or for less than admirable people " Training Day" or" King Of Scotland ". This is now the 21 Century & I felt he was saying that they are not going" quietly into the night". This is the whitest Academy Awards, since the late 90's. The bottom line is, that their is a lack of diversity in the Academy, both in terms of race, & gender,( Academy white male, average age 60) & this generation of actors of color & others in the film industry are pointing this out. Times are ah changing, & I'm glad to see a Black man such as David Oyelowo saying enough is enough ! Here's an idea. How about we recognize ourselves. Make our own awards for excellence ceremony, one of the categories being film, air it on OWN and there by send the message to kiss our asses. Yes times are changing, but lets not wait for all the A holes to die off so we can have our time. Lets make our time now. Lets face it, everything we have we got because we took the initiative to create it or get it. Not because someone woke up one day feeling generous. My brother are you paying attention ? You should check out what the beautiful, & most talented Ava Duvernay the director of " Selma " has to say about this matter, I LOVE This Sister ! We have been giving ourselves awards forever, their is the BET Awards, & the N.A.A.C.P. Awards, which every year acknowledges those in the fields of Films & T.V. Oh, by the way Oprah has signed Ava Duvernay to do a series for her OWN network !

Look, it's not that I don't hear what you're saying, I do and I agree with you. But I don't think we should hold our breaths waiting for them to get a clue. Should we put pressure on them? Absolutely, but in the meantime, we need to celebrate ourselves, wether or not they celebrate us.

Guys movies will get made with black folks and headlining black folks some will be written and directed by Black folks, but here is the problem Hollywood works on what worked, this goes for film makers of all hue only about 2% of film makers do anything truly ground breaking and that includes themes note whenever there is a ground breaking movie that works, everyone and their mother start an endless list of imitating, we here can predict the first ground breaker well written, well casted and directed by A film maker him or her of any hue..{although I am hoping one from our community}would take the lead, and produce an epic about any of Africa's classic civilizations that person and that film would be rewarded financially and high to high acclaim, instead of the abysmally disappointing EMPIRE with it's predictable cliche,Empire could as a series be Mali,Kemet,Kush,Zimbabwe etc, it need not be vanilla either if done for starz or HBO it could be as provocative as Rome or Spartacus, although I wouldn't recommend that route for the big screen,BET is now making mini series, see the Book Of Negroes in the culture corner they could break new ground here, Oprah love strong female characters well then make a series or a movie about the Kandakes or Queens of Meroe,as far as recognition Black folks can do that as a matter of fact take ol Oscar back to his roots and and hand out the Ptah awards. There is a great hunger for that type of grounding movie or series if judged by comments and conversations on the internet.

I agree with you whole heartily, concerning a ground breaking film, that would have one of Africa's ancient magnificent empires as it's driving narrative. I thought I would see such a film in my life time, but now feel, I might not be around when such a film is made" But Hope Springs Eternal". Who know's who might be reading this post & reading ESR; maybe somebody on Oprahs staff ? So you don't like Empire; well I do, for I guess i don't expect broadcast T.V. to really think outside the box. Empire seems as good as it gets with a cast of Black folks at the center of this series. Not a Big fan of Hip Hop but the series seems to be dealing with some provocative issues like homophobia in Hip Hop etc. I heard one entertainment host describe Empire as, " Dallas Meets The Ghetto". I did see a gold Ankh on the desk of Terrence Howard!! It seems to be a growing trend that Black actors are showing up from the sliver screen to the small screen or should I say the Flat screen, which in the near future might take the thunder from the big screen, for many Black actors are just not getting the roles & work in Hollywood & are turning to the television, esp. when you have gifted writers like Miss Shondra Rhims . The brother who wrote the screen adaption for" 12 Years A slave " & also received an Oscar for his screen play has written a made for T.V. series premiering soon.

Actually come to think of it "Queen of the Damned". With the late Alliyahh portraying Alaska. It bombed though. The media has attempted to portray the ancient Egyptians black. Alas no money was made.

These are the possibilities of what a film with people of African descent could look like ! I'm sorry I'm new to this subject on the Internet and new to this forum. But that is a stupid thingto say about Jewish people. I am Jewish and believe the AEs were black, but their reasons for hiding this fact from the population isn't some Jewsih conspiracy. Jewish people know that their ancestors were African. We only got lighter over the centuries. I had a typical Jewfro growing up. My hair broke a pair of clippers when I was like 20. Most Jewish people are actually on your side. This is about $$$. The target audience is white Europeans with a ego s through the roof. If blacks were rich and Africa was rich. This problem wouldn't even exist. I do agree they should (black people) make movies on their own. Who cares if it doesn't make any money. If Oprah put in let's say $200 million dollars to make a movie showing black African Egyptians with light skinned Jewish slaves that would really shake up the status quo. Everyone here also needs to admit that if society finally accepted the ancient Egyptians were black then black people would need to accept that they had slaves as well. I understand that most of you don't believe that the exodus happened. But why couldn't have it happened?? Are you guys afraid to admit that you too had slaves and treated them poorly?

Don't understand why you quoted me ? But I would like to address a couple of things you said. "Jewish people know their ancestors were Black" : could you please give me some quotes or references to this fact that they know & accept their African roots. " Everyone here need to admit that if society finally accepted the ancient Egyptians were Black people than Black people would need to accept that they had slaves as well." I don't think anyone on this blog/site is saying that Africans never had slaves, for they did, it is the TYPE OF SLAVERY THEY HAD! For one, a well known Jewish archaeologist( can't remember his name) has said the Exodus story is just that, a story , & he is a devout Jew. But he separates his faith from the hard truth of archaeology. I also just about five months ago saw a program on the Bible & Jewish archaeology,( I'll try find a link later )basically said the same thing. Because Exodus was written many years later doing the Babylonian captivity . Also the Exodus story has more to do with Canaan a vassal state of ancient Egypt.

When it comes to ancient Egypt being African & Black including, information about Nubia most every other broadcast channel, including National Geographic,& The History Channel, they walk the status Quo line. But one does not throw out the Baby with the Bathe water ; PBS has a large range of programming that warrants viewing, including the link with program I provided.By the way, I believe this was a BBC production that for me is a cut above America's PBS programming ; keep an open mind .

This is the best I can do for saying Jewish people were black back in the day.
Paternal haplogroups are families of Y chromosomes that all trace back to a single mutation at a specific place and time. By looking at the geographic distribution of these related lineages, we learn how our ancient male ancestors migrated throughout the world.
Haplogroup: E1b1b1c, a subgroup of E1b1b Age: more than 15,000 years Region: Near East, northeastern Africa, southern Europe Example Populations: Ethiopians, Jordanians, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews Highlight: Most people who bear E1b1b1c trace their roots to the Near East about 15,000 years ago. Haplogroups of You and Your Connections
Note I believe that the ancient Hebrews looked like Ethiopians
